Beano Game
Who Heard About Beano Game?
Did you know that the beano game was the “ancestor” of the bingo game as we know it today? The beano game was a simple but very interesting game that involved cards made from cigar boxes, and beans to mark them. Read on to learn more about beano and its conversion to bingo.
History Of Beano Game
Beano had its roots in Europe, more specifically in Italy, where it was played in the year 1530. It was the lottery at the time, and it is still played to this day in Italy. The game spread to France as well, played by the wealthy, and to Germany, as a children’s game to help them with their learning.
Way back then, beano game took different rules and designs for cards depending on the country it was played in, and who played it. The game was simplified for laymen and children, or made more sophisticated for aristocrats and noblemen.
First Time Beano game Was Played
The first record of beano game being played in the United States was at a carnival in Atlanta, Georgia in 1929. It was a country fair game, and it used circular cards cut out from cigar boxes, all numbered, and each player would mark their cards with beans.
Because of this, whenever a player won, he or she shouted out “Beano!”
From “ Beano game !” To “Bingo!”
The change of name was quite accidental and amusing, because during one of the games in Atlanta, one of the players won and shouted “Bingo!”, raising a bout of laughter. Of course, people afterwards thought that bingo had a better ring to it, and the game rose in popularity under this new name.
As this went on, a toy company owned by Edward Lowe adopted and licensed the game. He started selling card sets in the 1930s especially for bingo, which made it even more popular. Churches then started using the game to raise funds and contribution for different causes, and spread out as a popular pastime as well. The first congregation was from the catholic church in the US and Canada.
Another Beano Game To Note
There is another Beano game that may not be as popular as bingo today. This beano game involves throwing beanbags into holes in a wooden board. The points are earned by throwing beanbags into the holes and also onto the board if they fall short.
This game is played in a similar manner as horseshoes because the player has to stand a distance away from the wooden board to throw the beanbag. It can be a very fun craft activity for you and your family especially when making beanbags for the game.
Bingo As We Know It Today
Bingo came to be associated with old people, due to its use as a pastime in many old people’s homes. Its reputation as a church game also made it unappealing to younger people. With time and changes in playing rules and technology, bingo is now appreciated by people of all ages.
Online bingo is now more popular than ever before, because it provides many advantages that players need to win money. Online bingo sites provide interactive platforms and software to make playing bingo much easier and fun for everyone.
So if you had never heard about the beano game, now you know that it has a major influence on the bingo games that we know and love.
